Art, Science, and the Soul of a Bat

Bats are more than science projects. We celebrate artists, writers, filmmakers, and performers who honor non-human lives.

A Shout Out to the Creative Community

More Than Science Projects

Science is great, but bats are more than just science projects. We seek collaboration with creatives of all kinds. Bats are unique living beings with their own personalities, life stories, and souls. We strive to support artists who celebrate and honor the non-human animals of this world.

Laura Cañas
Poet / Visual Artist

An art project that reimagines classified ads as poetic artifacts, centering the overlooked and unseen. Laura’s work finds the extraordinary in the marginalized – perspectives that resonate deeply with the bat advocacy mission.

Linh Le
ABR Volunteer · Gardener-in-Residence (Spring 2024)

Exploring the boundaries between human and non-human through performance and gardening. Linh’s residency brought both green thumbs and a questioning spirit to our spaces and mission.

ABR Volunteer · Anthropologist, Professor, Photographer, Conservationist
Founder of “Matilda Day” (January 17th)

Creator of animal memorials and founder of Matilda Day – honoring the lives of individual bats with the dignity they deserve. Amanda’s work asks us to see each bat as an individual with a life story worth remembering.

ABR Volunteer · Novelist
“Brother Brontë”

Fiction that crosses the boundary between human and animal consciousness. Fernando’s novels inhabit the interior lives of non-human creatures, dissolving the borders we use to separate ourselves from the rest of the living world.

Marianne Hoffmeister Castro
Filmmaker-in-Residence

A documentary exploration of the liminal hours that belong to bats. Marianne’s film work captures the transitional moment between human time and bat time – that charged, violet-hour world most people never pause long enough to see.

Juliet Whitsett
ABR Volunteer

A micro-institution dedicated to curiosity, care, and the overlooked corners of natural history. Proof that wonder doesn’t require scale – just attention, and a willingness to look closely at small things.

Painter

Painter of local cave fauna. Barbara’s work brings the hidden underground world of Austin’s cave species into the light – giving form and presence to creatures most people will never see in person.

Austin’s Bat-Themed Mardi Gras Krewe
Annual Halloween Parade & Chewbacchus (January 24th)

Spreading bat love through spectacle and community. The Krewe transforms Austin’s streets into a celebration of chiropteran life – combining costume, parade, and pure Austin weirdness in service of bat appreciation.

Baroque Coco
Documentarian

Capturing the intersection of Austin’s creative community and its beloved bat colonies. Baroque Coco’s documentary work preserves the living tradition of bat celebration – turning community ritual into lasting record.
